Modular installation “Stilton”

Each year, the Museum bookstore invites a contemporary artist to install themselves in a window in its space.

In 2024, Nicolas Boulard presents a modular installation entitled “Stilton”.

Nicolas Boulard covered the walls of this window with wallpaper presenting the appearance of "Stilton", the English blue-veined cheese. At its center, Toast IV, 2023, a slice of bread presented in an entomological frame and made from a manually perforated plate of laminated wood.

A graduate of the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts, Nicolas Boulard has been developing a unique artistic practice since 2002, mixing references from Minimal and Conceptual art with organic materials derived, for the most part, from food production. He pays particular attention to both the creative process and the autonomy of the work.

Since 2010, he has continued the Specific Cheeses project, a study on the similarity between the shapes of Minimal Art and the shapes of cheeses. His work has been presented in exhibitions in France (Frac Aquitaine, Frac Alsace, La Halle des Bouchers art center) and abroad (Moma in San Francisco, Machine Project in Los Angeles, S-air in Japan).

Many multiples of the artist are on sale in the bookstore, including plaster casts made from real cheeses: Edam, Appenzeller or Emmental.

There is also the reissue of the complete collection of Specific Cheeses fanzines, an anthology of the figure of cheese in the history of the arts from Antiquity to the present day, as well as multiples and small pocket works such as Pain ou Swiss Cheesse Model.
