Towns and Villages

Montsoreau

Castle, flowery alleys, troglodytes and old dwellings dominate the Loire-Vienne confluence. Adjoining Touraine and Poitou, Montsoreau is at the heart of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park. Labeled among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France", it is a privileged tourist stage. Why not during the Puces de Montsoreau on the second Sunday of each month?

History & Heritage

The first known name is Rest; it is the name of the Gallo-Roman villa located in the hollow of the valley which pierces the hillside. We then find this word in the name of the church of Saint-Pierre-de-Rest. In both cases, it designates the nets whose Latin origin is restis. A priory is attested from the XNUMXth century. In the Middle Ages, the village then included two towns, Rest and Montsoreau, Rest corresponding to the agglomerated district around the current parish church.

The name of Montsoreau appears for the first time in a charter of 1089 in the form castrum of Monte Sorello. The fortress belongs to Guillaume de Montsoreau, vassal of the Count of Anjou. The first lords of Montsoreau gave land to Robert d'Arbrissel on which the latter founded the Abbey of Fontevraud. The castle becomes the property of Jean de Chambes, adviser to the King of France Charles VII.

The castle was completely rebuilt around 1450. Consisting of a rectangular main building flanked by two square towers, the castle has a fairly austere north facade. The steeply sloped base once plunged directly into the Loire. The south facade of the main building is pierced with multiple mullioned windows. The floors are served by two spiral staircases. The one on the left is contemporary with the construction of the castle. On the right, the main staircase, on the other hand, was erected around 1520 where pilasters and bas-reliefs illustrate the taste for the antique of the Renaissance period.
In 1576, Charles de Chambes married Françoise de Maridor, the famous Lady of Monsoreau by Alexandre Dumas. In the novel, the author took some liberties with historical reality, but it is certain that Bussy d'Amboise, then governor of Anjou, tried to seduce the beautiful lady of Montsoreau. Charles de Chambes had a letter written to his wife in order to attract Bussy to his Château de la Coutancière located in Brain-sur-Allonnes. The governor was assassinated on August 19, 1579.

In ruins at the end of the 1913th century, the castle became the property of the Department of Maine-et-Loire from 1923 thanks to the action of the Marquis de Geoffre, general counsellor. Since then, the site has undergone major restoration phases (1997 then 2016). Since April XNUMX, the Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art has hosted the Philippe Méaille collection, considered one of the most important in the world on the theme of Conceptual Art.

The village develops around the ports on the Loire. The stone of La Maumenière, beautiful white tufa, is famous throughout Anjou and major extraction quarries puncture the hillside. Perreyeux, craftsmen, fishermen and winegrowers trade by waterway. From the wedges along the Loire to the steep streets at the top of the hillside, history, tradition and heritage will delight visitors.

During the visit, discover the Dolmen of Pierrelée, the old castral chapel, the parish church of Saint-Pierre-de-Rest and its carved stalls, the old palace of the Sénéchaussée and its half-timbered walls from the XNUMXth century. century, the mill-cellar of La Tranchée, the prune and apple ovens of the XNUMXth century… A rich heritage forging the Loire identity of the villages of the Côte Saumuroise, of which Montsoreau is one of the jewels.

Activities and skills

A strong tourist and therefore economic dynamic maintains a certain number of services throughout the year on the municipal territory: local shops (food, hairdresser, garage, beauty salon, spa, etc.), weekly market (Sunday) , wine estates and tasting cellars, wine shop, art galleries and antique dealers, decoration shops, varied and high quality accommodation, a dozen restaurants, sites to visit, everything is there for a pleasant stay.

The troglodytes can be discovered at the mushroom farm of Saut aux Loups where the know-how of the past is told: extraction of tuffeau, cultivation of button mushrooms... or at the Loire Wine Market where you discover the wines of the valley of the Loire thanks to an oenological journey in 10 stages.

The Maison du Parc is an essential step to understand the richness and diversity of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park. A heritage circuit suitable for families invites you to discover the history of the village at the time of the Loire navy, through the story of a young sailor. The discovery booklet, available in French and English, is on sale for €1 at the Maison du Parc. You can also download it for free from the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park website.

The varied events offered throughout the year are intended for all audiences. The Puces de Montsoreau have been set up for 30 years, every second Sunday of the month, on the harbor slipways of the XNUMXth century and are labeled "France Europe Antiquités Qualité". On this occasion, also take advantage of the Plus des Puces: for several years, every day of Puces, a collective of craftsmen with golden hands occupies the socio-cultural center located opposite the Loire and near the quays. Restorers of furniture and precious objects, creators of talents, you can entrust them with your projects or your damaged objects.
The Musicales de Montsoreau, in July and August, are an opportunity to welcome internationally renowned artists in exceptional places: the castle and the choir of the Saint-Pierre-de-Rest church.

Traditional boat trips (boats moored at Montsoreau and Candes-St-Martin), fishing (sale of maps at the Tourist Office), canoeing (possible departures/arrivals from Montsoreau; inquire at the Tourist Office on the rental companies nearby), sporting events, conferences, guided tours of the village in the summer season...
So many reasons to stay in this Small City of Character which is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France.
Without forgetting of course the essential hikes: on foot (the GR3 crosses the village, Montsoreau-Turquant hike or even by taking the path along the Loire, on the right bank of the river, to enjoy the view of the Castle and the village from Ile au Than and Varennes-sur-Loire...), by bike (La Loire à Vélo, cycle loop Between the Loire and the Forest which enhances any stay on this beautiful coast of Saumur!

An equestrian circuit also crosses the village. Ask at the Tourist Office!
