Nestled at the intersection of the national forests of Chandelais and Monnaie, La Lande-Chasles has a charming rural church. The proximity of the forest massif makes it an ideal starting point for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding...
The settlement of Landes-Chasles is very old as evidenced by the presence of megaliths and a tumulus. The foundations of a Gallo-Roman villa were found in the western part of the town, near the ancient Angers-Tours road.
In 1326, the village bears the name of Landa Karoli. Lande probably comes from the Germanic word land, which designates a territory, and Chasles could be a deformation of Charles. La Lande-Chasles would therefore originally be “the country of Charles”.
All that remains of the medieval fortified castle is a XNUMXth century tower, transformed into a dovecote. The current castle, surrounded by a beautiful park, dates from the Second Empire (private property).
The small Romanesque church, dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, is part of the network of “welcoming churches in Anjou”. The building was probably built in two stages.
The freestone nave dates from the beginning of the 2010th century. The choir, in limestone and sandstone rubble, is a little later. These two parts are separated by a thick wall which extends above the roof to form the bell tower. Two semicircular arches accommodate the bells: the one on the left, installed in XNUMX, rings the Angelus morning, noon and evening. The second bell strikes the hours. In the center of the bell tower, there is a sculpture representing a man riding a fantastic animal.
Landes-Chasles, the least populated municipality of Maine-et-Loire, is nevertheless one of the most efficient in its digital communication. The town has been labeled "Village internet 3@" since 2018. It also ranks 4th among the most active towns on Twitter in Pays-de-la-Loire, behind Angers, Nantes and Le Mans.
La Landes-Chasles extends over 508 hectares, including 260 hectares of forest. At a bend in the path, walkers can discover places laden with legends such as “Mont Jules” (tumulus of uncertain origin), the “Pierre Frite” and “Grenouille” megaliths. This large forest massif lends itself particularly well to mountain biking and horseback riding.
The GAEC Chèvrerie Ory, labeled "Discovery Farm", offers tours of its goat farm and its artisanal cheese dairy. From milking to molding, you will discover all the secrets of goat cheese making (free visits all year round for customers of the cheese dairy, guided tours by appointment for groups).
