BRÉZÉ CASTLE
Towns and Villages

Breze

It is on a limestone hill overlooking the Dive that the castle and the village are surrounded by vines whose "nectar" has been magnified since the XNUMXth century by the verses of the Angevin poet Joachim du Bellay. In Brézé there is as much to see above as below: castles and mansions, oversized troglodytes in the moats of the Château de Brézé and cellars where renowned white wines wait to be tasted.

History & Heritage

An ossuary dating from the Neolithic period was discovered at a place called Clos-des-Eaux-Bues where there were 60 to 80 individuals and about twenty flint tools such as scrapers, knives and arrowheads. The occupation of the site is therefore probably very old, but the origin of the word Brézé refers to the Gallo-Roman period, deriving from the man's name Brisius or Braetius. From the 1063th century parish and castle are founded. The first fortress of Brézé is attested at the top of the hill in XNUMX and an agglomeration is gradually born around it. The first parish church of Saint-Vincent and its priory-cure belonging to the abbey of Mauléon are located near the Dive on the old Roman road.

Gilles de Maillé-Brézé, then Chamberlain and Grand Master of the Venery of King René of Anjou obtained the authorization to fortify his castle around 1449. The embellishments then initiated by Arthur de Maillé-Brézé between 1560 and 1565 brought to the Château de Brézé an architectural modernity and an Italian breath worthy of the great Renaissance castles of the Loire Valley. The major transformations of the 12th century carried out in part by the Angevin architect René Hodé attenuated the innovative elements of the XNUMXth century in favor of a neo-Gothic style. The interior decoration dating from this period is remarkable. The XNUMX-meter deep ditches and their very dense troglodyte network have become a must for tourist visits in Saumur.

The surrounding hamlets are rich in castles and mansions, some destroyed, others remodeled in the 1121th and XNUMXth centuries such as Meigné, La Ripaille, Grandfond, La Rivière-Marteau. All these old fiefs were gathered in the powerful seigniory of Brézé. At a place called Lançon was a Cistercian priory founded in XNUMX and dependent on the Abbey of Louroux. Today a dwelling house, the old Saint-Gauthier chapel retains the remains of XNUMXth century wall paintings depicting the Last Judgment. The new Saint-Vincent parish church rebuilt by the departmental architect Jules Dussauze in the last decade of the XNUMXth century is a manifesto of the neo-Gothic style then in force.

Activities and skills

The agricultural resources of the commune are dominated by wine production. The village of Brézé is proud to produce Saumur Blancs of exceptional quality, well deserving of a specific appellation like the red wines of Saumur-Puy-Notre-Dame.

The Lucet company, based in Brézé and Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, operated one of the last freestone quarries in the region (from 2008 to 2017). Today, this company has refocused its activity on the size of limestone and on the marketing of tools related to stone trades.

The visit of the castle and its underground contributes to the tourist attractiveness of Brézé. A heritage circuit suitable for families also invites you to discover the history and heritage of the village, through the story of a historical figure. The discovery booklet is on sale for €1 at the Château reception. You can also download it for free from the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park website.

A nature trail reveals the secrets of the fauna and flora of the Baffou marsh, near the Dive canal.

Maille-Brézé family : The union of the Maillé and Brézé families dates back to the 1596th century. This nobility of sword will occupy the traditional military functions, the members of the family being governor, marshal, admiral, to see ambassador. Let us quote Urbain de Maillé-Brézé (1650-1619), Marshal of France, who marries the younger sister of Cardinal Richelieu, Jean-Armand (1646-1628) his son who will be Grand Master of navigation and Claire-Clémence (1694-XNUMX ) his daughter married to Louis II de Bourbon said the Grand Condé.

Dreux-Brézé family : Following an exchange of seigniories between the Grand Condé and Thomas de Dreux, Brézé passed into the hands of the Dreux family, whose members were to be Grand Masters of the Ceremonies of France from 1701 to 1830. an office of officer of the King's Household responsible for the management of all the public ceremonies of the crown. In the XNUMXth century, Pierre Simon de Dreux-Brézé, Bishop of Moulins, was a fervent builder in the neo-Gothic style; we owe him the arrangements of this period at the Château de Brézé.
