The current temple was built in the 19th century by the architect Charles Joly-Leterme, not far from the first Protestant temple of Saumur built in 1593 when Philippe Duplessis-Mornay governed the city.
Of Greek inspiration, the Temple of Saumur has a simple and uncluttered architecture, conducive to meditation. The front portico is made up of four fluted Doric columns. Under the portico, on the left, you can still see the Tables of the Law, the only vestiges of the first temple.
As is the rule in Reformed theology, the interior of the temple is very bare: a cross, an imposing pulpit and a small table in the choir.
The temple is currently undergoing restoration work and is temporarily closed to the public.
