The village of Dénezé-sous-Doué hosts the most unusual site in Saumur: hundreds of characters carved into the wall of the cave intertwine into a gigantic comic strip sculpted in freestone. A visit off the beaten track...

Are you curious and capable of wonder? All you have to do is go down the few steps that separate the Sculpture Cellar from the surface to enter a surreal, magical and moving world. Listed as a Historic Monument by André Malraux, it is a unique site and, even today, a great enigma of history.

Hundreds of characters were sculpted in total darkness by unknown authors in tuffeau stone between the 15th and 17th centuries... Several hypotheses have been raised by archaeologists and historians. Far from the crowded tourist sites, come and discover this mysterious cellar, while it's still possible... You won't easily forget it!

In 2024, the Cave aux Sculptures celebrates the 50th anniversary of its rediscovery, the perfect opportunity to come and admire the 200 sculptures hidden underground for several centuries!
