About us
This superb cellar was in the last century a high place for the production of tapped apples in the region. A real industry in the 19th century, this activity had completely disappeared after the First World War. Today, alone to perpetuate this artisanal know-how, Jackie and Robin invite you to discover this mysterious delicacy which has been the subject of numerous television reports.
The one-hour guided tour retraces, in a late 19th century atmosphere, a slice of the laborious life of our elders. The reconstruction of the troglodyte habitat, the apple ovens and the tools of yesteryear immerse the visitor in the atmosphere of the time. The historical context and the manufacturing process are also explained in a film. Finally, the visit ends with the unmissable tasting of rehydrated or dried apples.
It was in the 18th and 19th centuries in the Loire Valley, between Chinon and Saumur, that the production of apples, on the Anjou side, and pears, on the Touraine side, developed. At the time, it was the merchant navy that constituted the bulk of the clientele. The typed apple makes it possible to balance the diet of sailors and to fight against scurvy. Following the ravages of phylloxera in the vineyard, this production is a real boon for ruined winegrowers. It becomes the main activity of the region. It is a flourishing industry: in 1914, there were more than 200 ovens in Turquant. The arrival of modern conservation processes and the return of the vine will cause its decline and then its disappearance.
Bring warm clothing (temperature in the troglodytes: 10 to 12°C).
