Domaine Fouet is a family estate located in Saint-Cyr-En-Bourg, in the heart of the Saumur-Chamigny Appellation, 10 minutes from Saumur. The estate is certified as Organic Agriculture and Julien Fouet represents the 6th generation of winegrowers.
The estate cultivates around twenty hectares of organic vines, with Cabernet Franc, Pineau d'Aunis and Chenin grape varieties, and produces Saumur Blanc and Saumur Champigny Appellation wines as well as Natural Sparkling Wines and sulphite-free wines. The vines are worked with respect for biodiversity and the wines produced offer a quality that reflects the magnificent terroirs of the region. Tuffeau, a limestone dating back 90 million years, gives the wines a remarkable specificity. The white wines made from Chenin evoke great freshness and the red wines, fruity and light, express all their Saumur elegance.
Concerned about preserving the environment, the estate practices eco-grazing to maintain the vines as well as agroforestry thanks to the planting of apple trees in certain plots.
You can visit the cellar independently, thanks to a booklet that guides you step by step and at your own pace. You will discover the history of the estate, the work of the winemaker, our barrels and the amphoras. You can also admire the troglodyte cellar and its XNUMXth century habitat. This heritage treasure, forgotten for generations, was rediscovered only ten years ago. We discovered a bread oven and other traces of everyday life there, which remained exceptionally intact.
In a friendly and family atmosphere, a commented tasting and a wine sale are offered at the end of each visit. Free and open access.
In order to respect the environment, the vines of the Domaine are conducted in Organic Agriculture, the estate has been labeled organic since 2020.
Eco-grazing is practiced there: about fifteen sheep are settled in the plots from time to time. They maintain the vines, limit mechanical weeding and contribute to biodiversity.
To increase biodiversity, the estate is implementing agroforestry, or vitiforestry. The association of trees and the cultivation of vines has considerable advantages, particularly in the field of soil protection. At Domaine Fouet, apple trees are planted in the vines to then make organic cider.
