The Château de Montreuil-Bellay, with its 15 defense towers and 600 meters of ramparts, looks like an impregnable fortress!
The feudal castle of Montreuil-Bellay was built around 1025. You should see the barbican, the fortified moats and ramparts, the vaulted underground passages, the kitchen with a central hearth, vestiges of the Middle Ages from this period.
Then the lords flank the fortress with elegant constructions based on large vaulted cellars dating from the XNUMXth century.
The new castle and the collegiate church, the home of the canons, the ovens (exhibitions) date from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. The chateau is fully furnished. It is also a wine estate whose vintages you will discover.
As an option for your visit to the castle, go into the heart of the bowels of the fortress during an unusual guided tour. From the barbican, to the ditches topped by the ramparts, you will discover the unique military architecture of this place and the story of memorable battles which illustrate the thousand-year-old history of the castle.
The duration of this route is 45 minutes, in addition to the visit. Booking is recommended. This tour is not accessible for strollers or people with reduced mobility and may be canceled in the event of bad weather.
Treasure hunt at the castle: the chatelaine of Montreuil-Bellay has found an old chest in the cellars of the castle. It certainly contains a treasure!
By following the visit route, thanks to a treasure hunt, the children explore and discover the smallest corners of the castle. In the gardens as in the interiors, they carry out the investigation and collect the precious clues to find the code of the famous treasure!
