Heritage time – The lost identity of the wooden recumbent figure

As part of Un Automne à Fontevraud, discover “Le Temps du patrimoine”, two new conferences at the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud.

This conference focuses on the mystery surrounding the identity of one of the Plantagenet recumbent figures. The one with the effigy of Isabelle of Angoulême, the widow of John Lackland, buried in Fontevraud in 1246. The wooden recumbent figure has long posed a serious problem of identification for historians and art historians. By combining medieval sources and those of the modern era and by summoning several disciplines, another identity emerges.
